Surviving the Holidays with your Toddler

When I was a young mom, like you, I wanted to make the holidays special for my children. I put a lot of pressure on myself. I obsessed over every detail and drag them to every holiday light show, nativity scene, and Santa sighting, only to have several meltdowns because they were tired and over stimulated.   In these early years I didn’t realize that I had many more years to create traditions and memories. I didn’t have to do it all at once. I have compiled a few tips on how to get through the holidays so that you and your toddler can enjoy them without the stress.
  1. Do not start preparing for the holidays too early. Even though the stores have started putting up decorations and Santa is already in the mall, we do not need to start until after Thanksgiving. Young children do not have the same sense of time as we do. The anticipation can cause overstimulation for your child. Little ones often express over stimulation, over tired and stress by crying, acting out, tantruming and/or crying.
  2. Do not expect your toddler to sit through the entire Thanksgiving or holiday dinner. This is a long time for little ones. Be prepared and bring food that he/she likes just in case there is not toddler friendly food. Also,  give your toddler opportunities to get up and walk around. You and your partner can take turns eating and getting up walking around with your child.
  3. Pack toys/activities for your toddler or preschooler to do. It might be great for you to catch up with relatives that you haven’t seen all year but this isn’t much fun for toddlers and preschoolers.
  4. If traveling in a car or plane be prepared. Pack snacks, water and most importantly inexpensive dollar store toys/activities that you save just for that trip. If possible, try to book flights after your child’s morning nap or if you can, at bedtime.
  5. Keep your child on a schedule as much as possible. As many days as you can, stick to your child’s nap and bedtime schedule. An overtired child can kill the holiday cheer.
  6. Slow Down! Don’t put pressure on yourself to do everything and take your children to every holiday activity. They are young, and there will be plenty of time to take them to holiday activities. Remember to slow down. It is much better to only do a few activities at a slower pace with a happy toddler than to be stressed trying to get in 10 activities with a crying and over tired toddler.
  7. Let the children help out with the holiday preparations. Everything does not have to be Pinterest perfect! Let toddlers do simple things like handing you the decorations for the tree, putting sprinkles on the cookies. Preschoolers can put Christmas cards in the envelopes and help to bake cookies and treats.
Holiday traditions are very important for you and your growing family. However, they are not fun if your toddler is tired, crying or tantruming. I promise, you have plenty of time to build those traditions. You do not need to do them all at once while your children are very young. Take the stress off of yourself and your toddler this season.

Benefits of Yoga for Kids

yogakidsYoga has many benefits to kids on physical, social and emotional levels. Yoga for adults tends to be a very solitary activity even if it is done in a classroom with other students it is very internally focused.  In a kids yoga class, they tend to be very focused on the group and many of the activities require paying attention to the interactions and dynamics of the group such as singing, dancing, discussion, games, partner and group poses.
The class is much more externally focused for a portion of a time.  Many of the activities encourage cooperation and teamwork such as when they are doing a partner pose where one person is balancing on the other.  There are usually ice-breakers as well in the beginning of class where kids introduce themselves and get to know the other kids such as throwing a ball to another child and then they say their name.  These warm-ups are more essential since kids will have a higher amount of anxiety around people they don’t know.
On an emotional level, the poses help to develop concentration, empathy, focus, confidence, self-esteem, respect for others, improved attitude, more positive outlook.  This will often help them achieve better results with their schoolwork and have better relations with their family members, friends and classmates. It equips them with skills to be able to manage their stress more effectively. It can help with many behavioral issues as well since they learn how to manage their emotions more effectively.  On a spiritual level, they help to develop compassion, awareness and a sense of purpose as well.
What are some ways to teach breath awareness, meditation, visualization, yogic concepts to kids?
One fun way to teach the importance of oxygen is to light a candle and then put it inside a glass.  When the candle goes out, you can initiate a discussion of why it went out and then use this example of how we need oxygen for our bodies to light us up and give us energy.  This is a great activity to do when the kids are rambunctious and you want to focus them and settle them down.
Some great breathing exercises are bumble bee breath.  You have the child close their eyes and plug their ears and then make a Hmmmmmmmm sound.  After you ask them what their experience was like.  This helps them to inwardly focus.  You can also have them block their ears and eyes and have them do this with an ocean breath sound as well.  Have them imagine the waves coming in from the ocean up to the shore.  It is very focusing, grounding and helps them to concentrate.        You could also have them hiss like a snake while on their bellies.  They should repeat about 3-5 times very slowly and then check in and see how they feel afterwards.
A nice group-breath activity would be to have all of them join their hands in a circle and then they come in with a breath together and raise their hands and then exhale and back out of the circle with their arms coming down.  This helps to build community and cooperation and can be a centering exercise.
A nice way to incorporate breath work with confidence building activities is to have them inhale in a positive affirmation such as, “ I am strong” and then they can exhale out a different affirmation such as, “ I am beautiful”.
An effective way to teach yoga lifestyle concepts to kids is by having a discussion first about topics such as non-violence but to use kid-friendly language by using a simpler word such as, “peace”. You then talk about examples of peace such as when your brother or sister is being mean to you, you can send them thoughts of peace instead of just thinking negative thoughts.  Let the child experience what happens when they do this.  Ask for examples of other ways they can show peace. When you are in a pose later in class that is quite meditative you can remind them that this is practicing peace as well since you are feeling calm when you are doing it.
A fun way to teach visualization and meditation to kids is with, ”Imagination Vacations”.  You can lead them through some very simple guided imagery (the younger the child, the simpler the imagery should be) such as a being in outer space, in the ocean, on the beach, playing in a garden.  After this you can tie it together by having them draw a picture of what they saw.  They can focus on their picture whenever they want a special place to return to.
What are some tie-ins for kids?
A tie-in is a way to bring yogic concepts from class into their every day life at home or in the classroom, which helps kids to internalize the lessons.  There are stories and books that you can use as a basis for discussion at the end of class. One example would be the candle in the glass that extinguishes which I discussed above.  Another good one is by using three yoga blocks to represent the breath, mind and body.  You can pile the blocks on top of each other and show how they are all connected.  Have one of the kids remove a block and show how they seem to fall apart when they are not working together or connected.
Another example is having the kids draw with crayons after they had their visualization.  For older kids and pre-teens you could have them journal things such as, “What do I like about myself?” or “Write Yourself a Thank You Note.”
What are specific activities or behaviors in a yoga class that can build self-esteem?
Using affirmations when in a pose is a great way to build self-esteem.  When you are in a very strengthening and challenging pose such as Warrior, you could have everyone yell, “ I am strong (or proud)”.
You could also have songs that have positive affirmations as well, such as the I Grow With Yoga song that has verses such as, I grow strong like a mountain or I see the universe in you… the beauty in your heart shines through.
For the visualizations, you could have them imagine goals they are achieving such as being able to focus better in school so they can get better grades, improved behaviors such as getting along better with their siblings or parents.  Use simple kid-friendly language so that it is memorable and has lots of colorful imagery in there.
You can have them create art projects that affirm positive things such as a Gratitude Tree or Me Tree (things they like about themselves).  You could either have one big tree and everyone hangs something on it or kids could draw their own tree which they could then take home.

Five Ways to Safely Occupy Your Child When Busy

Life with young children can be very busy. Parents often find themselves juggling mealtimes, school runs, and housework on top of jobs and other life commitments. If you are looking for ideas to keep your child busy while you are taking care of those necessary everyday tasks, here are five tips to make life a little easier.

Utilise the Highchair
You may think of the highchair as simply a place for your child to eat, and then proceed to cover with food. This simple piece of furniture is actually a goldmine for busy parents who need some relief. While you are working on tasks such as paying bills, returning e-mails, or doing the dishes your child can sit in their highchair with a snack, crayons, or even small toys.
You can also create a sensory box full of dried food items such as beans and pasta that your child can explore while sitting.  As the highchair can be moved to any room, you can put the child near you so you can still keep an eye on them while you work (if your child in under 3, they should never be left unattended with food or small objects).
Wear Them
Mothers have carried their children in slings or long cloths for thousands of years. While the act of ‘baby wearing’ has been in and out of fashion through the years, it is back and more popular than ever. Parents all over the world (dads too!) are taking advantage of this easy, no fuss way to transport their children. For busy parents, especially those with young babies, a sling can be a Godsend. Your child can sleep soundly while you clean up around the house, do laundry, and even do your grocery shopping!
Get Artistic
It is never too early to get your child’s creative juices flowing. Art is a fantastic way to occupy your child while you are busy. You can create your own edible finger paints and play dough so you won’t need to worry about your child giving their art a little taste. Purchase a large roll of butcher paper and they can create an endless array of pictures.  If you are worried about mess, lay opened garbage bags on the ground around the makeshift art studio for easy clean-up afterwards.
Play Music
Babies and toddlers love music, and it can be a wonderful tool to keep them entertained, busy, and even relaxed. For toddlers you can put on directional songs that are both fun and interactive such as the ‘Hokey Pokey’, ‘Pat-A-Cake Pat-A-Cake’, and ‘If You’re Happy and You Know It’. If you teach your child the hand motions ahead of time, you will be able to put on the music and let them independently join along. For babies you can play instrumental, classical, or even jazz music which will soothe your child and help them to be calm while you complete your tasks.
Bring Out the Play-mat
For babies who can lift their own heads and look around, a play-mat is a wonderful way to not only keep them busy, but also to strengthen their muscles and coordination. Doctors recommend at least 30 minutes of tummy time a day (Dr. Greene) but this can be extended to 90 minutes over the day as your child reaches the 4-6 month mark. There are many types of activity mats available to purchase in stores, but you can also make your own by placing small toys and soft books on a large blanket. Your baby will love exploring the items on the play mat, and in the process will gain valuable motor skills necessary for their continued development.

Evaluation and Treatment of Infertility

Evaluation and Treatment of Infertility

Since ancient times infertility has been a serious and complex problem, with implications not only for the family but also for countries and governments. Today, thanks to scientific advances we have demystified many aspects related to infertility. Also based on scientific research we’ve been able to manage these issues in a more rational and efficient manner. In the following we will review some aspects related to this problem. If you need more information then please click here.
When we talk about infertility we mean the reduced ability of a couple to achieve a pregnancy. We know that in a young couple of reproductive age the probability of achieving a pregnancy in one menstrual cycle is approximately 20% to 25%. After 3 months, the probability increases to 50%, then after 1 year having sex without any contraceptive the probability of pregnancy is about 85%. Therefore, 15% of couples will fail to achieve a pregnancy after one year and it is this group of people who benefit from evaluation and treatment for infertility.
Age
On the other hand, we must take into account the factor of age especially in women. After age 35 there is a marked decrease in the reproductive capacity of the woman which continues to decline over the years. This is largely due to a decrease in the quantity and quality of eggs remaining, which not only affects the probability of pregnancy, but also increases the probability of spontaneous abortions and babies with genetic defects.
Evaluation and treatment of infertility
With age also increases the likelihood of developing medical conditions or diseases that affect fertility such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, sexually transmitted diseases, pelvic infections, diabetes, and obesity, among others. Therefore, in patients older than 35 years it is  recommended to start treatment for infertility evaluation after 6 months of unsuccessful attempts to achieve a pregnancy.
Important factors
It goes without saying that it takes a functional reproductive system in both the man and the woman to achieve pregnancy. In many cases infertility is the result of multiple causes both in women as in men, and sometimes there is not a specific etiology.
Infertility evaluation must be conducted in a systematic manner to include studies of a ovulatory factor, menstrual cycle, uterine and tubal factor, cervical factor, pelvic factor, and male infertility factor.
Ovulatory Factor: The vast majority of patients who do not have regular menstrual bleeding have ovulatory problems. The causes of this condition are hormone problems such as hypo-or hyperthyroidism, hiperprolactinemia, and hyperandrogenism. Stress, anorexia nervosa, marked loss or weight gain and premature menopause also cause ovulation problems. Ovulatory function can be evaluated using temperature measurements, ovulatory basal levels of progesterone and endometrial biopsy.
Menstrual cycle and its stages: In cases of hormonal problems such as thyroid problems or prolactin. It is possible to correct the problem by correcting the hormonal imbalance of the ovulatory diagnosed. In cases of anovulation associated with hyperandrogenism (polycystic ovarian syndrome) are drugs like clomiphene citrate, which help induce ovulation. For patients not adequately stimulated, oral medications can be used as the FSH hormone injections to stimulate egg development.
Uterine and tubal factor: The partial or total blockage of the fallopian tubes can be caused by inflammatory reactions due to previous pelvic infection or endometriosis. This not only causes infertility but also increases the likelihood of ectopic pregnancies. The blockage can also be caused by the presence of fibroids near the junction of the fallopian tubes and uterus. Uterine cavity defects such as septa, polyps, adhesions and fibroids have the potential to affect embryo implantation and cause spontaneous abortions. To assess both the uterine cavity as the fallopian tubes preference study is hysterosalpingogram.
Depending on the type of problem that is causing the blockage tubal or uterine defect, surgical treatments exist that can be used to correct the problem. If surgery is not an acceptable alternative for the type of tubal damage, then in-vitro-fertilization is the best choice. This treatment involves stimulation of the ovaries with fertility drugs (FSH) to increase the quantity of eggs produced. Before ovulation occurs, the eggs are aspirated and then fertilized in the laboratory. Produced embryos are transferred into the uterine cavity, where implantation occurs. The in-vitro-fertilization is also indicated in couples with infertility caused by ovulatory factor, male factor, endometriosis or unexplained infertility.
Cervical Factor: Cervix not only serves as a reservoir for sperm but also produces mucus that facilitates transportation and sperm function. There are conditions under which this mucus can make an environment hostile to sperm and impair fertility. In the post-coital study, a sample of cervical mucus is examined after the couple has had sex to assess the quality of cervical mucus and its interaction with sperm. If there is any problem in this regard, including antibodies against sperm can treat partner’s intrauterine inseminations using sperm. This treatment consists of placing the sperm directly into the uterine cavity using a catheter after having processed and cleaned the semen sample in the laboratory.
Pelvic Factor: Endometriosis occurs when the tissue lining the uterine cavity is in other areas than the uterine cavity, for example, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and the abdominal cavity. Endometriosis not only can cause inflammatory reactions affecting pelvic anatomy but can also produce toxins that affect the quality and function of the eggs, sperm and embryos. Using laparoscopy can remove visible areas of endometriosis in the pelvic cavity and also restore the anatomy in areas where you are adhesions caused by endometriosis or previous pelvic infections.
Male Infertility Factor: Approximately 40% of couples who suffer from infertility are the cause of a male infertility factor, either because of the quality or concentration of sperm or their transportation problems to the vagina and uterus. Semen analysis gives us information on the concentration, motility and morphology of sperm among other things, and serves as an initial tool to assess male problems. Male fertility can be affected by hormonal problems, neurological and genetic, exposure to radiation or industrial toxins and environmental, for some drugs, alcohol, and snuff, and recreational drugs and genital infections or trauma.
Intrauterine insemination technique supplemented sperm controlled hyperstimulation of the ovaries may be used in pairs, where there is some degree of impairment in concentration, motility and sperm morphology, thereby increasing the number of sperm reaching the fallopian tubes and the number of eggs produced. In cases where the total number of motile sperm is very low, it is recommended in vitro fertilization (IVF) technique supplemented with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) where micromanipulation techniques using a sperm is injected into each mature egg in order to increase the likelihood of fertilization.
Unexplained infertility: In 15-20% of couples undergoing infertility evaluation will be the etiology of the condition. This does not mean that there is a problem but at present we have not discovered the cause of this problem. However, there are successful treatments for these conditions as are controlled ovarian hyperstimulation where we use fertility drugs to increase the quantity and quality of eggs produced per cycle and increase the likelihood of pregnancy. This treatment can be supplemented with sperm intrauterine inseminations. In vitro fertilization is another alternative treatment available for this type of condition. At present, in vitro fertilization is the most successful among different assisted reproductive techniques to achieve a pregnancy.

What Type of Shoe Should Your Baby Wear?

Foot Health
When you are looking for baby shoes, it is important to find a pair that is best for your’ baby’s foot development and health. There are several shoes out there to choose from. It is important to find shoes that will support the baby’s posture and can help to form the feet correctly. If you are looking for the perfect shoes for your baby, here are some things that you should look for:

Walking barefoot is beneficial because it allows your foot to contort in accordance to the ground. By getting a flexible shoe, your baby’s foot will adapt to the surface. This will help the feet to develop better.
Weight
Find a light shoe that allows your baby’s feet move freely. Heavy shoes can also overwork muscles and cause sore legs.
Barefoot-1Width
A shoe should have plenty of width in the toes to allow your baby’s toes enough room to move around while helping proper growth and development.
Interiors
Layers -135-1A baby’s shoe should be soft like the inside of an athletic shoe to absorb any shocks. Try to find shoes with flat and thin soles. This will simulate walking barefoot, which is much better for your baby’s feet since it allows them to adapt to the surface they are walking on.
One way that you can ensure that a baby’s shoe meets all of these standards is by getting a custom made shoe. KidOFit is a professional company that makes customized shoes to fit each individual baby’s needs and requirements for providing good foot development.
